Leatherback Turtles are hatching on Cabarete Beach, June 2008 |
| |
Last week during the anual PKRA kitevent something unusual did take place on Cabarete Beach:
A large bach of Leatherback turttles hatched and started their journey to sea, through life and many of us got to see the turtels emerge from their burried eggs in the sand and the subsequent shuffle to the sea first hand.
As far as I know it is unusual for these turtles to emerge form their eggs before sunset, since the darkenss offeres some protection from the predators like shore birds. Non the less we got to see them in natural light just as the sun set... Only Cabarete oltimers have ever seen an adult Leatherback Turtle burry its eggs on this very beach or young ones hatching...

Ocean World a quick trip to the Puerto Plata park / late June 2007 |
| |
Prior to the PKRA Kite World Cup in Cabarete I had the chance among other press people and a bunch of PKRA riders to visit the Park. There are many great attractions, among them the shark encounter and diving with Bottlenose dolphins. We got to do both, I walked away with a number of images I would like the share with you. We spent just a few hours in the park, that time frame was way too short to see all that Ocean World has to offer, let alone interact with the animals...

Brazil-06 images from various location, Nov. 2006 |
| |
I spent the last November for work purposes and for a little bit of fun in Brazil. My travel itinerary brought me via Miami to Fortaleza. Fortaleza is the capital of the province of Ceará in the north east of Brazil. From there a number of other travelers from Europe and I got on a Land Rover convoy to Jericoacoara. The trip can take up to 6 hours. The last stretch is on the beach since there is no road access to Jeri. I have been in Jericoacoara. 9 years ago and I was curious to see the changes. The town is world renown by now, for its beautiful beaches and some of the best windsurfing anywhere in the northern hemisphere in the fall. Kitesurfing is also taking a foothold in the region and one town over in Prea is the local hub...
2 weeks later I traveled with my friends Kamil and Freddy to Natal. It was a first for me and curious to get to know jet and other town and a region. We traveled a bit by rental car south and north out of the city. There are beautiful beaches all along this coast too.
The last week saw me back in Jericoacoara. covering a press trip as photographer. This time I got to fly along the coast via helicopter, curtesy of the local tourism board. I did shorten the trip considerably and the coastline is stunning to see from the air!
The images in the attached gallery show, the aerial trip to Jeri from Fortaleza, the town, some of the scenery and of course some of the hottest windsurfing action to be seen anywhere. The athletes I got to work with included such notables as Yann Sorlut PWA rider from France, Andre Paskowski, freestyle world champion, and local boys Jan Mauro Lemos and Marcilio Browne. The later just finished his first world cup season as a top ten finisher in freestyle and wave sailing.
There were many other riders and local people that allowed me to document a slice of their lives. I want to thank them all for their hospitality and cooperation!
In no specific order you will find images of local capuera dancer/ fighters, scenery shots that hopefully give you a bit of an impression of the site and plenty shots of the local fisherman with their boats. They are quite the sailors! The last few shots show a few of the beaches we traveled to in "Rio Grande do Norte", near Natal. I end the show with just a few images taken in Fortaleza and a look through the panoramic window at 6 AM in Fortaleza airport...

Cabarete Classic images taken on Cabarete Beach / July 2006 |
| |
The weekend of the 15th and 16th of July we saw some great windsurfing action on Cabarete Beach. Pablito Guzman with the help of co-organizer Bill Stark and race director Mark Hillaby put on a slalom race and a freestyle event. 45 competitors from Argentina, Curacao, Canada, the United States, France, Germany and the Dominican Republic came to compete. The best news were the many juniors and mini juniors that joined, representing the future of the sport and other events like this one!
The action was hot on both competition days and the big names put on a good show. Check out the gallery to get a feeling for those days...

master of the ocean, images taken at Encuentro / Feb. 2006 |
| |
Last Tuesday, the 28th of February "The Master of the Ocean" contest finished here in epic fashion. The event was held at Encuentro. Previous event days showed moderate winds and at best overhead high waves for surfing.
The winners of all disciplines were to be decided on this last day with waves big and gnarly and wind gusts over 20 knots alternating with rain squalls. It was just your regular day in the park, no way José! Contenders for the top slots in the ranking were all local boys including Tony Garcia (windsurfing), Jesmarin Puentes (surfing), Alex Soto (kitesurfing) and Luciano Gonzales (all disciplines). These guys were going off despite the tough conditions.
Unfortunately the light was poor so I suffered with every push of the shutter button. Despite the poor light conditions I want to share a few images with you...

carnival La Vega, images taken in a "Cibao" town / Feb. 2006 |
| |
On any Sunday during the month of February you can see the Carnival parades in a number of Dominican towns. The carnival in La Vega is known to be the most popular. The "Veganos" take having fun very seriously, especially during this time of year and it shows!
The linked gallery shows you a collection of images from one Sunday afternoon. Three of use went there; Eveline as our guide, she was raised there and thus possesses local knowledge and Jason "The Rock" as my body guard. Somehow I still managed to have my pocket picked and I came home flat broke and with my local papers gone...

Maui fall, 2005 images from Maui / Oct.-Nov. 2005 |
| |
Following my visit to BC I spent a month on the Hawaiian island of Maui. I needed to warm up my tropically inclined toes, readily cold in BC and feel sunbaked sand under my feet again. I was there from late October to late November.
In the following gallery you will find many windsurfing, some kitesurfing, surfing and a few select landscape images. I was fortunate to catch a number of windy days, days with great waves captured in pixel based images and I got to sail enough to keep myself stoked too. The time flew by way too quick and future visits are in order...

Vancouver BC, fall 2005 just a few images / Sept.-Oct. 2005 |
| |
I left Cabarete in September anticipating an other sloooowww-low season I decided to do a bit of traveling...
The first stop of my journey was western Canada, more precisely Vancouver in British Columbia and its close surroundings. Beautifull fall days presenting lots of color were intercepted with days of grey and a more subdued feel to them. The images are by no means a complete photo story with a beginning and end, rather the images just represent a little slice of time... Many thanks go out to my gracious host and friend Hermann the German!

Lenin portrait images at La Boca / 9th July 2005 |
| |
A short wile back I had the pleasure to photograph Lenin a striking young lady at a lovely location near Cabarete!
Here are a variety of images we came up with in the course of a late afternoon... Also with us was Francina, a friend now 8 months pregnant. She came along looking for a bit of a diversion, to take her mind of the discomfort of advanced pregnancy. In a couple of images I included her as well...

Engadin_Surf Marathon / August 2004 |
| |
Friends of mine, Clarita and Solo invited me to come to Silvaplana in August of 2004 and visit. It also happened to be the time of the Engadiner Surf Marathon and now also a freestyle event in Windsurfing.
I took the opportunity to do some visiting and at the same time cover the event photographically.
Images linked to this page show some of the class action of this very well run event!
