Baja California and the Sea of Cortez, 2007
sea lion Sea of Cortez
Close to 20 years have passed since my last visit to Baja and the Sea of Cortez area. A family and friends reunion on the charter boat the Don Jose got me back there this spring! Diana and Jack McIntyre decided to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary by inviting us all for the cruise. Boy was it fun!!!!

I had previously worked on the Don Jose so I loved seeing all the different islands and corners of this ocean again. The Sea of Cortez is a magic place, surprising you again and again by showing an incredible diversity of marine life. You get to see all the people living on it's fringes...

 Suriname 2003-2004/ Christmas New Year

Paramaribo, Suriname
I got to spend almost a month in Suriname! The place is fascinating and remote. Among other excursions I took a trip to the interior and stayed in a camp near a number of Bruin villages. Bruins are an ethnic group within Suriname, they are the descendents of escaped slaves that went back to their old way of live, essentially tribal societies living upstream form the plantations. Occasionally they came downstream to raid the plantations...

The rivers are the roads to travel on in the interior since highways are scarce to this day!

 Brazil

Cocovado, Rio

I did travel to Brazil for the first time in 1997! Sanghita my girlfriend at the time traveled with me. Our itinerary allowed us to see a bit of a cross section of this amazing country; Fortaleza, Jericoacoara, Salvador, Foz do Iguazu, Florianopolis and Rio de Janeiro.

 Caribbean Images

Lac Bay, Bonaire

Since 18 years have I lived in the Caribbean, or more exactly one of it's largest islands, the Dominican Republic. The proximity has given me many chances to visit some of the other islands; Trinidad, Tobago, the Dutch Antilles, Puerto Rico, Martinique, Turks and Caicos and Cuba. The differences in culture and natural beauty are striking and remarkable. What a melting pot!

 Spain

Alhambra

Spain! I have traveled there just a couple of times. That country holds a lot of excitement and mystery for me, more so than most other European countries. I love the landscape there, big vistas and the old fortified villages and fortresses...

 South African Images

sailing at Suset Beach, Capetown
Going to South Africa takes a bit of planing since it is quite distant and one tends to go there for longer periods of time. It is also one of the largest countries on the African continent so distances are vast. My travel companion was Keith Koenig.

Together we planed a 3 strike approach, 3 different activities in 3 weeks; windsurfing in Cape Town and around it, a surf trip up the "Garden Route" to Port Elizabeth and in the last week a safari to the Krueger Park on the border to Mozambique.

 The American Southwest

Sierra Nevada, Mount Whitney

Ever since my first visit to the American Southwest have the desert and mountains held me fascinated. I keep coming back to see new things, travel new roads and be captivated again and again. Hiking in this country often miles from the next point of civilization calms my soul and makes my spirit soar!

It is also one of the most incredible natural worlds to walk through as a photographer and take wonderful images that have a timeless quality...

 The Columbia River Gorge

Columbia River Gorge
I spent 4 summers in the Gorge. I was either based in Hood River or in Bingen across the Columbia river. The windsurfing got me there in the first place in the early to mid eighties. The sailing is wold class, with the winds a howling through the Gorge east to west most of the summer. The winds do reverse at times with the shift of high pressure systems.

Hood River and the towns nearby have become quite the hub for outdoor sports of any kind. Mount Hood nearby offers all year round skiing. Early fall brought on the best light for photos, the sun dropping in the west right down to the river, flanked by the cliffs on both sides...

Baja California and the Sea of Cortez
Baja California, Sierra de la Giganta
I heard about Baja for the first time as I lived and worked in Bermuda! As a diehard windsurfer, always on the lookout for the next spot to explore it came across my radar screen. It turned out to be all it promised as a sailing location, actually dozens of them... In late spring through the summer the sailing is best on the west coast. Local thermals draw cooler ocean breezes inland. In the winter the sailing remains in the Sea of Cortez, especially the southern half.
The landscape here reminds very much of the US southwest, the Mexican people turned out to be very hospitable and warm. Broken down on the side of the road someone is sure to stop and offer help!

 New York City

New York, Manhatten

New York city needs no introduction! There is no place quite like it and teaming as much with life in the fast lane.
The diversity of the cultures here make New York a most American city jet is it quite apart also an entity in itself, not so much American just New York...
