Cabarete Dec-2011 PDF Print E-mail

At the beginning of December 2011 I traveled back to Cabarete for a short 3 week visit. It was great to hookup with some of my clients and friends and again touch bases. I hoped to be doing a bit of sailing, but the wind would not cooperate right up and until my departure. I actually sailed for an hour on an onshore day, not the greatest conditions, but nevertheless it got me out into Cabarete Bay.

I did a fair amount of photography during my trip (I am still editing pictures), some of it was surfing, because the time of year brings often good groundswells from the North Atlantic. On a glassy day at El Encuentro the action is hot and easy to follow, it happens right there, close enough for everyone to enjoy... I know many of the surfers and I even met some I did not know before. The images are not just about surfing, but also about the people in it as well. The local surfing community appears to be growing, also within the younger generation.

Here we go I hope you like the Images/ slideshow and if you would like to see some more you may want to check out my other surfing images on facebook too. If you are friends with me you should be directed straight to the gallery otherwise send a request; my user name is Silvan Wick.

Portugal- Lisbon

A short wile ago I spent a short week in Lisbon. I also traveled a bit within Portugal, driving as far south as Sines and as far west as Guincho, probably the most western promontory of the European Continent. Guincho is also known as a world class surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing destination!

I adjusted to Lisbon real fast, it's such an interesting city, lot's to see. I do have an affinity for towns at the waters edge, they put their stamp on the dwelling, the architecture and the people that live there...

So I put together a short gallery for you to look at and maybe if I am lucky, develop a bit of an impression of Lisbon and it's surrounding country. They are not all great photos, some are simply there to tell the story. I stayed at Pension: Residencial Mar dos Açores. It is a simple but nice place, with a friendly owner and helpful staff, located near the center of town.

I completed the first series of photography classes yesterday!

The 3 workshop (2 hour session each) schedule allowed us to break down the objective for each class: The overriding theme was: to make the most of your digital SLR or advanced compact camera!

  1. 10th April, 9.45 AM  Introduction: technical aspects of your camera gear, possibilities and limitations, "camera" language and terms; Aperture, shutter-speed, diaphram, bokeh, dept of field, vignetting, ISO, sensor size, pentaprism, angle of view, high definition video (HD), the sunny 16 rule, understanding the histogram and dynamic range... As you can see we did have quite a load on our plate!

  2. 24th April, 9.45 AM  Composition: photo rules, how to create strong images! We covered different situations and camera set ups in photography, during adventure trips, street photography, landscape work or fast action photography. After that we discussed the rules of composition; diagonal lines, geometric shapes, the rule of thirds, framing images, balancing elements, viewpoint, background, creating dept and cropping.

  3. 30th April, 4.00 PM  Let there be light! What are our light options: available light, fill flash use, flash photography, the use of reflectors, shooting in open shade and other light sources. We also addressed creating silhouettes, using shadows as elements in general, long exposures, rear curtain sync and more... post processing/ the digital darkroom

At this point I would like to tank all participants for their attendance and for giving me the possibility to share through photography!

Below are displayed 3 images of 3 participants!
