First Time Down Under!
I write this article sitting at a small desk in my room/ apartment in Canggu in Bali. I have been here for a couple of days and I have settled again just fine into tropical island life. Presently it is raining, it is after all that time of the year here, where that happens frequently. So, I try to make good use of my time and write a post…
I was here in Bali in January for the first time, liked it, but after the first week it rained so much that I felt, I needed to feel more sun, after all I have fled central Europe and it’s inclement winter weather. You don’t leave snow for rain, right?
A little over a week ago I spent 2 days in the mountains nearby, the Alpstein. These mountains are part of the Swiss Alps, sort of a northeastern promontory with a very interesting geology, craggy and steep ridges intercepted by lovely valleys and ‘Alps’.
I stayed overnight in an Auberge ‘Gasthaus Bollenwees’. The next morning I met a fellow photographer, Kathrin Grissemann. In a spontaneous decision we agreed to hike together a route up to the Säntis, the highest peak in this mountain range. We were spurred by the promise of improving weather, clearing skies and potentially awesome conditions for creating photographs.
With the late spring coming to central Europe and our north-eastern part of Switzerland came the wish to explore my neck of the woods some more.
I was looking forward to explore especially the ‘Alpstein‘ a northern section of the Alps, that is quick and easy to reach from St.Gallen the city where I live. I got myself a new pair of hiking boots and I was ready to hit the trail.
In the past week I shot some images with Mo. I had talked her into a photo shooting session maybe a month ago and in the past week we managed to coordinate our schedules…
A few days ago I had the chance to test my recently acquired Fuji XT-2 in a ‘Environmental’ Portrait session. I was curious to see, how the camera would respond and feel during the actual shooting and I wanted to see the quality and the dynamic range the final images would display.
It took time to get my own Fuji XT-2, I ordered one late November of 2016 and by the end of the year I still had no Idea when I would get my hands one one. Reason: Backorder…
Anyway by early February I finally held one in my hands and got to do a bit of personal testing/ exploring. Reading lot’s of reviews did prepare me in a rudimentary way of what the camera has to offer, but in order to learn to use it, I needed to take it out and shoot with it.
I was wondering last night, how I should end the year 2016 in photographic terms? Than it came to me and I decided to simply post some of my favorite images, that I have taken around these parts in the past year.
I am thinking about what has inspired me most in recent weeks about photography. Which piece of gear that has helped me to stay inspired in photography in recent weeks?
Well it’s 2 pieces of gear really. The NikCollection as in a software standalone and plugin for Lightroom and Photoshop and a 0.9 and a 3.0 Neutral Density (ND) filter.
The ‘Nik Collection’ you can download for free, it has awesome presets for processing color and black and white images, giving images some extra punch and or converting them to powerful black and white images.
A few day ago I had the pleasure of working with Michelle (Mimy) Morray. We got together to resolve some of her computer problems and went from there straight into creating the following images.
A couple of weeks ago I went on a road trip with some friends to the southern part of Switzerland, the Tessin and northern Italy. The Tessin is south of the Alps and therefore the weather is usually warmer, sunnier and more mediterran.
Moon and Stars is a week long music festival located on the ‘Piazza Grande’ of Locarno, a charming setting in the center of the town. The main act on the given night where: Earth Wind & Fire and Tom Jones.
